Course Description

This is an art class.   Though we will learn the technical theory and basics of software, this will serve as a foundation of making non-traditional time-based art work.  THE MAIN PURPOSE IS TO MAKE ART (To prevent repetition, there are 3 forbidden topics that will be covered in class).

This is a class about "getting video out there." The class will focus on production and fundamentals for the creation and distribution of audio/video work via DVD programming and videocasting on the web. We will look at alternatives to traditional distribution methods and work to develop material that is interactive. The class will concentrate on learning DVD Studio Pro and the various programs used to create podcasts.  However, these programs will be used as tools for the production and distribution of art.

DVDs are an easy to program interactive way to present high quality video that plays back win inexpensive equipment.  DVDs are becoming the main medium for presentations and multimedia portfolios.

Podcasting/videocasting/vlogging is revolutionizing the television medium. It provides a way to produce video work that can potentially reach millions of eyeballs.

Critical analysis is the basis for understanding and making art.  As such discussing art works in class will constitute a significant portion of the class.

The goals for this quarter

- Learn how digital video is used as artistic expression

- Learn the DVD Production Process

- Master the art of compression

- Master DVD SP 4

- Have an understanding of Compressor and how/why to compress

- Have your own video blog

Class Format
1. Discussions.  We will discuss pertinent issues and topics revolving around video/multimedia/art.  This implies that there will be talking.  This means that you will talk and not sit, staring blankly.

2. Lecture/demonstrations/hands-on.

3. Writing.  You will be given only one writing project

4. Video projects.  You will given assignments for class review and discussion. .
Attendance Policy
Be here and be on time. This is an INSANE amount of info to learn in 10 weeks, so you really don't want to miss any classes. Three unexcused absences/lateness result in one whole grade drop.  Excuses follow standard university policy.
Assignments link

All assignments must be handed in on time.  On time means at the beginning of class.  Assignments not handed at the beginning of the class on the due date will result in a grade penalty.  Late assignments will drop a letter grade for each class period of lateness.

The final project must be finished and prepared for viewing the 10th week.

Both assignment due dates and the final will require a MANDATORY attendance to a crit.  All students must attend these crits.  Failure to attend a crit will result in a failing grade for the project.

Grading

Grades are established on a point system up to 100.  They are broken down in the following manner:

10 pts             class participation

10 pts             Assignment 1: Space DVD

10 pts             Assignment 2 : Art Statement

30 pts             Assignment 3: Portfolio DVD

40 pts             Final ART DVD

Each assignment will be considered both from a technical aspect and an artistic aspect, the final grade reflecting the sum of the two.

Grading Scale

100-90 = A range (90-93 = A-)

  80-89 = B range (87-89 = B+, 80-83 = B-)

  70-79 = C range (77-79 =C+, 70-73 = C-)

  60-69 = D range (67-69 = D+, 60-63 = D+)

    0-59 = Failure

THE USE OF COPYRIGHTED MUSIC OR VIDEO IN THIS CLASS IS STRICTLY PROHIBITED AND WILL RESULT IN AN "e" FOR THE PROJECT.

Needed Materials

A bunch of blank DVD-Rs (spend some money and get good ones, not the cheap kind) and jewel cases (blech) or Sleeves (preferred)

NO FOOD OR DRINKS ARE ALLOWED IN THE LABS.
If you have food or drink by the computers (remember we are on security cameras) you will lose your lab access.
Other Items
Video vs Film
This is a video class.  When we shoot video we say "I am taping."  When we watch video we say "I am watching a video."  This is not a film class.  In film class you can say that you are "filming" or that you are watching a "film."  Embrace video, do not give it a complex by referring to it as film.

Plus, you will meet film snobs who will think your work is not "real" until you shoot film. Do not give them ammo to correct you when you say "I made a film" and they say "really!.." (with disdain) "did you shoot 16 or 35?"

"Telling the end" issue
For academic reasons I will, from time to time, disclose the ending of certain films/videos.  This is to facilitate discussion and is not meant to spoil your watching experience.
Disability Policy

Any student who feels he/she may need an accommodation based on the impact of a disability should contact me privately, as soon as possible, to discuss specific needs. Accommodations will be coordinated with:
